- The NHL and the International Ice Hockey Federation have agreed to work
- out a way for the league to suspend play for at least part of the 1998
- Winter Games so its players can compete for their national teams,
- commissioner Gary Bettman said. The NHL wants to enhance the league's
- stature and marketability and a Dream Tournament format ôwould focus more
- attention on hockey than before,ö Bettman said. The NHL Players'
- Association also must be consulted, but Bettman doesn't expect that to be
- a stumbling block. The 1998 Games are in Nagano, Japan.
-
- The 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Organizing Committee said it has approved
- the addition of women's ice hockey to the list of official medal events at
- the Games.

- The Canadian Hockey League has set up a BBS. Jim Price, the CHL Director
- of Information, has had it going since about February 1993.
- In addition to up-to-date stats on the CHL throughout the season, NHL
- Draft lists, etc. The CHLBBS also has a conference set up for the
- Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.
- The CAHA conference contains information of National Championships, its
- Hockey Resource Centre items, coaching, refereeing, registration figures,
- National Junior Team lists, up-to-date news releases, almost everything
- you would want to know on Canadian amateur hockey.
- The number for the CHLBBS line is (416) 299-6839, and voice support at
- (416) 298-3523. It is in DOS format using PROCOMM, so your settings are 8
- data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and echo off.
-
- The Canadian Hockey League BBS, which as been operating for the past
- year as a pay-per-use service for media, National Hockey League personnel
- and other hockey organizations, has introduced FREE public access for
- hockey fans.
- Our free service includes standings and scores from the three major
- junior leagues in the CHL as well as NHL information, numerous other
- hockey and sports related files, message areas etc.
- You can sign up for our free service (plus examine the other benefits of
- a full membership) on-line by dialing (416) 299-6839.

- 9. USENET Hockey Pool
-
- The USENET Hockey Pool is in its 7th year of operation. Last season,
- there were 261 teams from literally all over the world: every Canadian
- province, about 30 of the 50 U.S. states, and nine other countries in
- Europe and Asia.
- The pool operates like a stock market. You start off with 1000 points
- to "buy" the players of your team. You can sell and buy players during
- the season based upon their current point performance. Transactions are
- made by sending email messages, and standings are posted to
- rec.sport.hockey on a weekly basis.
- This year's pool will begin in early September, with an entry deadline
- of October 5. Send email to Andrew Scott (andrew@idacom.hp.com) for more
- information.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 10. Upcoming Dates
-
- Apr 7-17, 1994: IIHF World Championships (Pool B), Denmark.
- Apr 11-17, 1994: IIHF Women's World Championships, Lake Placid, NY, USA.
- Apr 25 - May 8, 1994: IIHF World Championships (Pool A), Italy.

- 11. Answers to some frequently asked questions:
-
- Q: Why are the Montreal Canadiens called the Habs?
- A: According to the magazine "Les Canadiens" (Number 2 of the 92-93
- season), the following is the origin of the nickname "Habitants/Habs":
- "Partial credit for this nickname actually goes to an American.
- Reporter Tex Rickard had picked up on a rumour (a false one, of course)
- someone had told him about the 'H' on the Canadiens' uniform. It seems
- that someone mentioned that it stood for "habitant", a French word that in
- those days was used to denote the farmers of Quebec.
- "'This guy told Tex that the French-speaking players on the team came
- from the country, and since they were "farmers", they were therefore
- "habitants!"' recalls Camille Desroches. 'Habs' is simply a short form of
- the word."
- "That was back in the mid-twenties. The Canadiens had just won the
- 1923-24 Stanley Cup, and two teams from New York were just joining the NHL
- (the Americans in 25 and the Rangers in 26). To understand Rickard's
- thinking, it helps to remember that this was also a period of intense
- development in a number of more remote regions of Quebec..."
-
- Q: Why is the Montreal Canadiens logo a large C with an H within it?
- A: In 1914-15, the Canadiens logo consisted of C with an A within it to
- signify Club Athletique Canadien (CAC). The next year, CAC no longer
- existed and it was changed to what it is now. The logo is actually CHC
- that is written on the Canadiens' jersey. It stands for "Club de Hockey
- Canadien".
-
- Q: What is the most informative hockey publication?
- A: The Hockey News is preferred by most North American hockey fans. It is
- a weekly journal with up-to-date info.
- Phone: 800-268-7793 (Canada and US)

-
- Q: What is the origin of the term "hat trick?"
- A: Hat trick - Three successive performances of a feat by the same
- individual in a contest. The oldest use is probably in cricket, where a
- hat trick is the dismissal by the bowler of 3 batsmen with 3 consecutive
- balls, for which the bowler apparently received a bonus of a new hat. The
- term is widely used in hockey and soccer to indicate the scoring of 3
- goals by one individual in a single game. Originally the hat trick was
- the scoring of 3 consecutive unanswered goals (commonly referred to as a
- "natural" hat trick), but they need not be consecutive or unanswered to
- qualify as a hat trick today. The term has also been used of a jockey's
- riding a winner in 3 consecutive races or winners in an annual race for 3
- consecutive years. A notable exception to the 3 successive performances
- which characterize a hat trick in other sports is its occasional use in
- baseball to mean that a player has hit for the cycle - a single, double,
- triple, and home run in one game. Source: Webster's Sports Dictionary.

-
- Q: What's the story concerning Jim Schoenfeld, Don Koharski and "Have
- another doughnut!"?
- A: In the Wales Conference finals in 1988, the coach of the New Jersey
- Devils was very upset with the calls of referee Koharski. At the end of
- the game, the two met in the runway to the dressing room. Besides the
- arguing, Schoenfeld was accused of bumping Koharski (he may have tripped
- by catching his skate off of the runway carpet). More words followed, with
- Koharski claiming that Schoenfeld pushed him and Schoenfeld calling him
- "You fat pig! Go have another Doughnut!" etc. The result was a one game
- suspension of Schoenfeld by the league. NJ management challenged the
- suspension by going outside the league and getting a court injunction
- rendering the suspension invalid (remember this is playoff time). The
- referees for the next game decided not to call the game, and after an hour
- delay, New Jersey's off-ice officials dressed and the game was played. NJ
- beat Boston in that game. Schoenfeld served the suspension the next game
- since the game was in NJ. Boston ended up winning the series 4-3.
